David W. Thornton resides in Vian. He and his wife of 35 years, Gladys, have two sons and five grandchildren. Thornton is a graduate of Vian High School and also attended Connors State College in Warner and Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, where he studied business and tourism management.
He worked for the Oklahoma Tourism and Recreation Department for 27 years before retiring as park manager at Tenkiller State Park in September 1997. As park manager, he managed an annual budget in excess of $1.1 million. He is also C.L.E.E.T. certified, as a law enforcement officer by the State of Oklahoma.
Thornton is a past president of the Oklahoma Park Managers Association and also served 10 years as a member of the Vian Public Schools Board of Education.
I believe that with my background in tourism, business and law enforcement, I can offer well-rounded representation of the district at the council table. I decided to run because I believe this is a critical time of healing for the Cherokee Nation, and I believe I can speed the process along with his education and experience.
This is a time for renewal. We need to be taking action to secure the future, instead of reacting to the latest crisis. We need to set our visions for the future, not the past. We need to establish a mission and actually accomplish our visions during the next four years.
I would love to have the opportunity to work with and help our people improve our way of life in District 3. I am asking for your vote on May 22 to improve our Cherokee Nation.
During the 1999 Elections, a candidate questionnaire was given to the
candidates addressing the following questions:
- What are your qualifications for this position
- What is the role of tribal council, in general and in relation to other
tribal branches of government
- Why do you believe you can make a difference and what are the top
priorities of your campaign platform
- What are the biggest problems facing the Cherokee people today and what
solution(s) do you propose
