Cherokee Chief Joins U.S. President at Tribal Law Enforcement Bill Signing Ceremony

President Barack Obama will sign the Tribal Law and Order Act of 2010 today at the White House, and he has invited Cherokee Nation Principal Chief Chad Smith and Cherokee Nation Marshal Sharon Wright to attend the signing ceremony.

Cherokee Holiday Slow-Pitch Tournament Open for Entries

It will soon be time to hear the umpire cry “Play ball!” at the opening of this year’s Cherokee National Holiday slow-pitch softball tournament, but there is still plenty of time to gather a team and enter. The tournament will be held from Friday, Sept. 3 through Sunday, Sept. 5, at the Cherokee Nation softball fields, located next to Sequoyah Schools.

Cherokee Nation Offering Free School Immunizations in Muskogee

The Cherokee Nation will be offering a free immunization clinic for all school-aged children ages 4 – 18 on Wednesday, July 28, from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. at the tribe’s Three Rivers Health Center in Muskogee, located at 1001 S. 41st St. East. The immunization clinic is open to all children and you do not have to be a Cherokee Nation citizen or a Native American to participate.

Hundreds of families in southern Delaware County will soon be able to turn on their taps and be rewarded with clean rural water from a new self-help waterline that Cherokee Nation will start constructing this month. A community kick-off event will begin at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday, July 28 at the Leach Fire Department located at 5791 Hwy 412 Alt, Rose, Okla., with the public invited to participate.

Cherokee Nation is inviting all Mayes County kids and their parents to a special back-to-school event on Tuesday, Aug. 3, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Pryor High School. Miss Cherokee Contestant Deadline Extended

The Cherokee Nation is inviting young Cherokee women the chance to represent their nation and receive higher education scholarships, recognition and the experience of a lifetime. The deadline for applications has been extended until Friday, July 30. As she has done for decades, Miss Cherokee serves as a messenger to promote the government, history, language and culture of the Cherokee people and as a special representative of the Cherokee Nation, the winner can look forward to a year of travel to many exciting events and places.

Cherokee Nation Opens New Tag Office in Delaware County

Along with four other convenient locations, the Cherokee Nation has now opened a new tag office at 1178 W. Cherokee St. in Jay, Okla., to better serve tribal citizens living in the northern counties. To celebrate, a ribbon cutting will take place Wednesday, July 21 at 10 a.m. at the main entrance of the building, with an open house to follow. The public is invited to come out to visit the new office and learn about its services.

Kids Learn Culture, Healthy Ways at Youth Camps

A total of 130 young people ages 9 – 12 took time this summer to learn Cherokee history and culture, along with the importance of healthy eating and exercise during the 21st annual Cherokee Nation summer camps held at Disney and Wagoner. This year’s camps featured the theme, “Cherokee Challenge of Walking the Trail of Tears,” and taught campers about nutrition, walking for physical activity and health and Cherokee history, including the Trail of Tears.

During this month’s general Tribal Council meeting held in Tahlequah, the Cherokee Nation honored a special set of brothers who both served in the military. “The Cherokee Nation is proud to honor our Cherokee veterans,” said Chad Smith, principal chief of the Cherokee Nation. Indian Health Service Honors Cherokee Nation

The Cherokee Nation has received two prestigious national awards for its recent accomplishments in community-based prevention efforts. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, through the Indian Health Service and the Bureau of Indian Affairs, has honored Cherokee Nation and Dr. B.J. Boyd, program director for the tribe’s behavioral health services program, with two of the 2010 Indian Health Service Behavioral Health Achievement Awards.

During its July monthly meeting the Cherokee Nation Tribal Council passed a plan that will establish five voting districts within the tribe’s jurisdictional boundary beginning with the 2011 tribal elections. The plan would establish three council seats for each of the five districts, and candidates would file for one of the three seats in that district. The tribe is currently working under a nine-district model.
