TAHLEQUAH, Okla. — Ashton Parent, a senior at Sequoyah Schools, recently served as a legislative page for State Representative Jerry McPeak in the Oklahoma House of Representatives.
“I learned a lot about government and how it works,” said Parent. “I now know how they pass bills and how they become law.”
Ashton served with more than 25 other high school students from all over Oklahoma and participated in a mock legislative session to get hands-on experience with working with state law.
“If I ever decide to go into government, I’ll have an advantage because I’ll know more than the average person,” Parent said.
Parent, 18, of Muskogee, is the daughter of Toby Parent and Carla Parent and the granddaughter of Jimmy and Priscilla Parent, of Warner. She is a citizen of the Cherokee Nation and has received a scholarship to play softball at Rogers State University in the fall.
